Take A Kid Fishing Day

The MIFSG in conjuction with Sunfish conducted a "Take A Kid Fishing Day" at Lake Moondarra on Sunday, 7th May. Over 20 kids nominated for the popular family event and a good day was had by all. We were greeted with perfect weather for the event, although the fish may have found the water a little too cold - as the number of fish caught was a little down on what was expected. The day covered different aspects of fishing from looking after the environment, to some of the do's and dont's when fishing, a release of some large barramundi and of course, plenty of fishing. The best fish landed for the day was a large sleepy cod, which gave the girls involved quite a thrill. Unfortunately, the fish were hard to come by, but if the eagerness shown by many of the children is any indication, then the fish living in Lake Moondarra need to be careful in the future, when looking for their next meal. After a couple of hours fishing, a BBQ lunch was served and three barramundi ranging in size from 75-80cm were tagged and then released by the kids. There were no shortage of volunteers for this job and it was great to see that the kids were just as happy to see fish being released as they were to see them caught. And generating that sort of attitude is really what the day is all about, to educate the kids and teach them the joys of fishing so that they too may see the value of having a suistanable fishery in Lake Moondarra and other waterways in general. These days are open to all kids of any level of experience. If you would like to get involved in the next "Take a Kid Fishing Day", stay tuned to this website and the North-West Star for the details. |
