“Isa Fish” #2 May 2009

Hi once again. This week I would like to talk to you about the MIFSG (Mt ISA FISH STOCKING GROUP) and what they do. My family and I have lived in the Isa for the last 18 months and we have grown more attached to Lake Moondarra, the fish stocking group and the people of Mt Isa. For a remote country town of about 20 to 25 thousand people the wealth of activities that you can do and places to see and fish are amazing.

With the big wet that we have just had and Lake Moondarra running over. A lot of Barra have been lost as they use this small window of opportunity to make a break to the Gulf. If it wasn’t for the MIFSG a great deal more would have been lost. At this stage about 300 Barra have been rescued from the water holes below the dam wall. All of these Barra have been tagged and released back into Lake Moondarra for the pleasure of anyone how would like to have a go at catching that illusive Barra. These 15 to 20 or more people of the MIFSG give up there valuable time to keep the Barra losses to a minimum.

It seems a shame that other people seem to think that it is a sport to use a spear guns to kill these amazing fish that are all ready trapped in these water holes or even use net to catch these fish. Some of these Barra are up to 1.2 metres long and I know that people like to have there picture taken with a massive Barra. If that is the case come and join the MIFSG and help with the stocking the lake and you may get the chance to get a photo of yourself holding that massive Barra..

Cheers for now
