Isa Fish #3

Hi everyone,

I can not believe that we are almost half way through another year and what a year it has been. One of my daughters caught her first Barra in the Lake at Richmond early this year as we became marooned there for five days and had the best time. We had fresh sleepy cod almost every night and we got to know some of the locals and spent much time exchanging fish stories with Richo and other stranded Mount Isan's in our unit’s carport.

The months have crept by and I have not heard of any Barra being landed recently in Lake Moondarra. But I have been told of good number of Black Bream being court at Lake Julius and a lot of fish being landed and lost in Karumba, with the Salmon on the run, along with the sharks. A beauty can be found in fish of the month.

The Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group has started organising the major annual fishing competition to be held in October, and there should be some very interesting developments in the coming weeks. The group are also having a display at the show in June and if you have the time, come and have a look at the Barra that will be on display.  These specimens are from the same batch of 15000 fingerlings that were released in the dam about a month ago.

As you will see, these fingerlings are doing well.  To consider that their release length was 30mm you will see first hand how quickly they grow in the right conditions. By October this year they should be around the 600mm length.

Well that’s all for another week, but have a look at the fish of the month.

Its great to see what people are prepared to do to catch fish in the far north.

Remember if you have any fishing stories or photos drop us a line. With the number of people interested in fishing in the North West why not try your luck on having your story, catch and mug shot in the paper.  It’s the best possible brag platform you could hope for!
